Halloween originated around 2,000 years ago when Celtic people in Europe celebrated the end of the harvest and the start of a new year in a festival called Samhain. The holiday first came to the United States in the 1840s. In the mid-1800s, Irish immigrants came to the United States, bringing their Halloween traditions with them.
